AdeleAdkins was the daughter of a single mother of just a few years and was raised in various working-class London neighborhood. Adkins enjoyed listening to current pop music when she was young and began to learn to play the clarinet and the guitar. She came across Etta the mid-century rhythm and blues performer, during her teens and began to consider a career as an artist. While she was being trained in a secondary school for performing arts funded by the federal government, a friend started posting songs Adkins had composed on Myspace. The site was soon contacted by record labels and was signed a contract with XL Recordings in 2006.
